The Philippines' electric powered jeepney program has been featured on international news program CNN as part of a story on how public transportation is transitioning to an environmentally friendly platform.
The project is aimed at making jeepneys- a colorful icon of local public transportation -more energy and environment efficient, and is in partnership with the Green Renewable Independent Power Producer. In the CNN story entitled 'Going Green' in Manila, the e-jeepney is touted as the eventual replacement for the country's most popular transport system, which is based on WW2 military jeeps.
Local automotive resource Top Gear Philippines says the 14-seater vehicle runs on four-speed manual transmission and is currently available in 5kw variant, while 7.5kw variant is being developed. According to MDJuan Enterprises, the exclusive assembler of the product, the e-jeepney's 5kw variant runs on 72V batteries which, if charged overnight, can go for 65 kilometers or eight hours and has a maximum speed of 40 km/h.
"We are very proud to help the environment through our expertise in vehicle parts manufacturing and vehicle assembly," PhUV director Rommel Juan said. Juan is likewise the general manager of MDJuan Enterprises, the exclusive assembler of the E Jeepney, and President and CEO of Binalot Fiesta Foods Inc.
