A design showroom that extols social entrepreneurship

By Joyce Roque

Feb 22, 2012

The practice of social entrepreneurship to do well by doing good is easier said than done. One needs the tenacity and the passion to not only be profitable but to enact social change in their communities. There is now good news to those wanting to make that difference.

The GKonomics Design Lab and Showroom recently opened at the third floor of the GK Pinagsama Multipurpose Hall in Taguig City. It serves as a promising venue where social entrepreneurs can sell their products to both individuals and corporate clients.  These goods range from upcycled Zesto doy packaging made into chic bags to sculptures made from driftwood taken from denuded forests. Behind each product is a story of renewal and hope - how you can take something bound for the trash bin and give it a second life.

All the products sold at the showroom can be ordered in bulk at affordable prices. It also comes with the added bonus of being customizable depending on your needs.

The showroom is run by GKonomics International Inc., an NGO group and Gawad Kalinga (GK) partner in social enterprise development with the goal of supporting social entrepreneurs to produce world-class products and services in the country in partnership with GK communities. Currently, it is composed of 47 enterprises, more than 600 beneficiaries and 58 villages all over the Philippines.

GKonomics President Cecille Manheimer told Entrepreneur.com.ph that, "We encourage social entrepreneurs to come in and put their businesses in the GK villages." She says, "If they don't have the capacity- a lot of times they have the heart or the vision to do it- we can mentor them."  In short, GKonomics will help the social entrepreneur put the business together. "We want to engage more social entrepreneurs," says Cecille.

You can go online to check out their online shop here. For product orders and inquiries email them at orders@gkonomics.com or call them at (02) 718.1738.
