Smells like school spirit: Mixing entrepreneurship and the UAAP

By Carlo P. Mallo

Sep 12, 2011

For the month of October, Entrepreneur.com.ph will be featuring businesses that saw the school spirit as a business opportunity. And what venue is there for the school spirit to shine than the annual University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) meet?

The Ateneo Blue Eagles failed to sweep a 14-0 win during the elimination period for this year’s UAAP meet. But win or lose, the Ateneo community is known as one of the strongest and tightly knit communities when it comes to school spirit.

Just look at all the products sold online that bears the school’s insignia. Chances are you’ll be overwhelmed.

For this week’s UAAP feature, Entrepreneur.com.ph tracked down two entrepreneurs who are banking on the products for the Ateneo market - Roxanne Montealegre of A-List, who has been in the market for two months, and the Blue Crew Pinas group of Mike Baldos, Merrill Lazo, Mark Intal, Mikko Abello, that has been in selling and designing shirts for the past two years.

“As a former student, I always wanted to have an Ateneo-inspired apparel that I can wear not just during a game or an event but everywhere. I also understand that it’s always hot in school so I developed a line of cardigan and jackets made perfectly for the warm weather,” said Roxanne.

However, not all designs are three-point shots.

“Some like them some don’t. Some are loyal, some don’t care. Sometimes you get lucky,” said the Blue Crew team.
