A senior college student started his business by mixing real fruit juices, fresh purees and non-alcoholic liquor extracts. A husband-and-wife tandem established a unique food cart venture. JR Inciong of Mocktail Madness and Ping and Jewel Joven of Ping Gu Mushroom Fries were the winners of last year’s first Next Big Food Entrepreneur Challenge.
This year, Entrepreneur Philippines embarks on its second run as it announces The Next Big Food Entrepreneur Challenge, in partnership with Solane LPG and Mercato Centrale Philippines. This is another opportunity for aspiring big food entrepreneurs, like JR, Ping and Jewel, to improve their business idea.
“Juice, shake, and milk tea stalls can be found anywhere, but mock cocktails are truly a rarity,” JR explains. Before he got into the business, JR worked as a bartender when he took a leave from school. There he learned the ropes of mixing drinks. He applied what he learned from his job to his entrepreneurship course in university, which eventually blossomed into a budding business enterprise.
The Joven couple, on the other hand, concentrated on oyster mushroom as its main product. So why name their business Ping Gu? “Ping is coincidentally my nickname, and Gu is Chinese for oyster mushrooms. It is not common, has an international feel, and is easy to recall,” shares Ping.
With the prize money, the winners embarked on expanding their ventures. Those who will clinch the Solane’s Next Big Food Entrepreneur Challenge this year will bag a cash prize worth P100,000 tax free, a six month rent-free stall in Mercato or Soderno, and a feature in Entrepreneur and Yummy Magazines.
The contest is open to all amateur and professional food entrepreneurs, 18 years old and above and residing in the Philippines. Contestants must pass the three-step process: Food Taste Test; Food Selling; and Submission of Business Plans.
Entrepreneur Philippines will hold a one-day food taste test on August 2, 5:00 p.m. at Mercato Centrale, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
