Mobile commerce is a growing trend worldwide.

The dawn of a cashless society has long begun with the credit card and the debit card. And recently, with the Filipino’s innovation, mobile phones have also become money carriers.

Smart Money, the pioneering mobile commerce platform of wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) was awarded as Best Operator-led Mobile Money Program at the recent Mobile Money Global Awards held in Dubai.  Smart was the only Philippine telco to be nominated and awarded during the 2011 Connected World Forum.

Launched in 2000, Smart is the world’s first reloadable electronic payment card linked to a mobile phone issued by BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) in the Philippines. A trusted enabler of partners here and abroad, Smart Money has established linkages with the leading banks of the Philippines, the country’s primary ATM, local and international remittance companies, and millions of MasterCard partner merchants worldwide.

“This is a great honor for Smart and the Philippines,” said Orlando B. Vea, Smart Chief Wireless Advisor. “This award highlights the huge potential of mobile commerce and strengthens our commitment to provide affordable, accessible and relevant mobile money services. Just like our advocacy to bring mobile phones and the internet within the reach of every Filipino, we are motivated all the more to make mobile commerce for all as well.”

Now, who knew that we would be using mobile phones to pay bills in the near future?
