Product focus: The Philippine-made designer chair

And 10 reasons for its high demand abroad
By Carlo P. Mallo |

The most recognizable pieces that represent Filipino design in the international arena are usually chairs, sofas and lounges. And when it comes to furniture pieces, there are two places in the country that are leading the pack--Cebu and Pampanga. These days, there is no better place to scout for these pieces than the Manila F.A.M.E. International.

Out-of-the-box, unconventional, and modern, Cebu City has become the trailblazer in contemporary furniture design. The Queen City of the South has also produced world-class furniture designers like Kenneth Cobonpue, among others.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Pampanga is known worldwide for its ability to produce intricately carved chairs that can rival any other furniture. Used in movie and television sets, the lavishly hand-carved chair in Pampanga has also completed the homes of European aristocrats and Middle Eastern royalty.

But what exactly makes Filipino designs world class? Rosvi Gaetos, executive director of the Center for International Trade Exposition and Missions, explains why Filipino design is considered the best in Asia-Pacific, if not the world.
