There\\\'s money in noodles

A call-center agent finds a quick way to enter the lucrative food industry.

Noodles, or pancit to Filipinos, are a mainstay of dining tables everywhere in the country. Borrowed from the Chinese and tweaked to suit local tastes, pancit is so popular that places have lent their names to the dish (like Pancit Malabon, Pancit Lucban and Pancit Tuguegarao).

 

[related|post]Filipino entrepreneurs have also developed a number of businesses around well-loved variants like pancit bihon, pancit palabok and pancit canton—and lately, Hong Kong stir-fried noodles, which local franchise companies have promoted and multiplied through food carts and kiosks.
Noodle House franchisee Luvimia Rose Santos  is certainly one who caught on to that booming franchising trend. “It started out like I was just planning to put up something to have a stable income,” says the former call-center agent. “I was hesitant at first, but my brother encouraged and empowered me.”

 

“So when I came across JC Franchising while I was browsing the Internet, I called them, got as much information as I could, and met up with them,” she adds.  At first, Santos wanted to franchise a Siomai King, another concept from JC Franchising. However, the administrators of Puregold Cubao, where her food stall was, did not permit her to do so, since the supermarket already had a tenant serving siomai.
With savings from her call-center salary and the financial support of her brother, Santos raised P170,000 in startup capital for her noodle cart, which went mostly to its operation. Santos asked her former workmate Jeraldine Baluyut, 34, to partner with her in the franchise.  

 

“At a very cheap price, people can eat something filling and at the same time save on costs,” Santos adds. One could have a filling snack at Noodle House for less than P50. Now the business partners are looking at expanding their business by opening more Noodle House stalls at crowded places like bus terminals. “Anywhere basta matao (with a lot of people),” Santos says. And where a lot of Filipinos are, pancit is sure to be too.
