When talking about big players in the battle for viewers on the small screen, two major networks immediately come to mind: ABS-CBN Corp., which operates Channel 2, and GMA Network Inc., which broadcasts on Channel 7.
The so-called network war is so intense that Filipino households are often classified based on their favorite television channel: Kapamilya (ABS-CBN Corp.) or Kapuso (GMA Network).
Aside from television broadcasting, both companies also have ventures in radio broadcasting, cable, movie production, music recording and digital operations. Apart from broadcasting, ABS-CBN also operates KidZania, an indoor theme park for kids in Bonifacio Global City.
Though ABS-CBN’s revenues are more than double those of GMA Network, both companies’ net income are almost the same at Php3.5 billion. ABS-CBN also invests more than GMA Network.
It’s harder to figure out who’s leading in terms of ratings and audience share. Not only do the two broadcasting companies rely on different monitoring agencies, they also provide different indicators. ABS-CBN relies on Kantar Media and cites nationwide figures. GMA relies on Nielsen Television and cites numbers covering only the country’s urban areas.
Historically, ABS-CBN claims dominance in the whole country, but GMA asserts the lead in urban areas, especially Metro Manila and surrounding areas.
