It looks the country’s largest telecommunication companies are working double time before the third telco sweeps in and starts offering services to the public, as both Globe and Smart were found to be providing better than historically recorded mobile data services, according to a report.
In its report titled “State of Mobile Network Experience” published on March 5, mobile operator analyst OpenSignal revealed both Globe Telecom and Smart Communications now have 4G availability scores greater than 70 percent, meaning users can now access LTE signal seven out ofÂ10 times, a sign of a mature LTE rollout.
Globe posted a 71.7 percent score, only slightly higher than Smart’s 70.8. These numbers are a huge boost from their scores just two years ago, which were at 55.2 percent and 40 percent respectively.
In terms of download speed, however, Smart has long outperformed its competitor as the average overall connection speed with the network is at 9 Mbps, versus Globe’s 5.5 Mbps. Smart’s higher score was largely thanks to its 4G average speed which is at 13 Mbps, while Globe recorded 7.5 Mbps.
Smart’s faster connection speeds have also helped the telecom inch out Globe in terms of video experience. OpenSignal asked users to score how fast videos load with their mobile data providers, and Smart got a score of 44 out of 100, with 100 as the highest. Meanwhile, Globe only got a measly 28. Still, both mobile data providers have a of catching up to do as the Philippines was found to have the worst video experience in the world in 2018.
According to OpenSignal, more improvements can be expected from the two telecoms as they prepare for the rollout of the government’s chosen third telco, Mislatel.
“The Mislatel consortium is set to launch the Philippines' third national mobile operator, putting competitive pressure on both Globe and Smart,” OpenSignal said in its report. “In the coming months we would expect to see both operators shore up their mobile broadband services in anticipation of Mislatel's launch.”
OpenSignal compiled the data from over 933 million measurements across 270,433 devices in the country. The data was gathered from November 1, 2019 to January 29, 2019.
