Not one of the top 10 passers in the November 2016 Bar exams is from Metro Manila’s dozens of law schools and colleges.
In the results released by the Supreme Court on May 3, the top 10 passers in 2016 graduated from schools in Cebu City, Negros Oriental province, Zamboanga del Norte province, Iloilo City, Davao City and Batangas City and Ilocos Sur.
The results released by the Supreme Court did not indicate the hometowns of the top 10 bar passers last year. But it seems likely that most of them hailed from localities outside Metro Manila because their schools are also outside the National Capital Region (NCR).
If that is the case, it represents another big change compared to past bar exam results. Since 1913, the hometowns of the topnotchers were mostly concentrated in Metro Manila. Out of the over a hundred top-placers between 1913 and 2016, at least 30 were from Metro Manila, with 20 of these coming from the City of Manila alone. The rest of the topnotchers came from more than 50 towns and cities outside the NCR. (See map and table)
Karen Mae Calam, who topped the 2016 bar exams with a grade of 89.05 percent, is an alumna of University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu. USC also produced three other students who placed in the top 10.
