Expect heavy traffic until around 11 am, as the Metro Manila Shake Drill is scheduled Wednesday morning, 9 AM.

The road closures are for a good cause though, as the metropolis prepares for the eventually of a mega earthquake.

These earthquake drills are aimed at preparing individuals and communities for the occurrence of “The Big One,” a magnitude 7.2 earthquake caused by movements in the West Valley Fault.

The first shake drill was conducted on July 30 of last year, after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in April 2015. According to Office of Civil Defense (OCD) spokesperson Romina Marasigan, the Nepal earthquake, including those in other countries like Japan, Ecuador, Myanmar, and others, should remind everyone to stay alert at all times.

Gina Lopez, ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation has accepted the Department of Environment and Natural Resources portfolio on Tuesday, June 21.

“After much introspection, I decided to accept it. Let’s see what happens,” said Lopez.

The incoming DENR secretary told the media of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s offer, “I’m deeply honored since it’s a controversial decision; that you have decided to trust me. I give you my firm commitment that I will do everything that I can and it’s not only to protect the environment [but also] to eradicate poverty.”

She is the daughter of the late Eugenio Lopez, Jr., former Chairman Emeritus of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, a network which was deemed to be anti-Duterte during the campaign period.

While the Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment (Kalikasan PNE) shows its support for Lopez, her acceptance of the DENR cabinet seat offer leaves the public anxious about what might happen to the Philippine mining industry.

The mining stocks were spooked early this week, with Philex Mining Corporation Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan tweeting on Monday:

On Monday afternoon, Lopez was offered the DENR post.

Lopez, known for being an anti-mining advocate and activist, spearheaded the “No to Mining in Palawan” campaign in 2011, which gathered at least 10 million signatures. - Serina Alonzo
