Marvin Agustin and 9 Top Entrepreneurs to Mentor Finalists in Search for PH’s Best Social Enterprises

Competition is sponsored by Gina Lopez’s new foundation for uplifting poor communities

Associations, social enterprises, cooperatives, foundations, or non-government organizations have the chance to win Php100,000 in cash and mentorship from some of the country’s top entrepreneurs in a nationwide search for projects that have the most impact in uplifting poor communities.

Launched in March, the year-long competition is a project of former Department of Environment and National Resources Secretary Gina Lopez’s Loving Organizations for Village Economies (ILOVE) Foundation together with select government agencies such as the Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Tourism. The competition is called Quest for Love.

Organizations that help develop low-income communities may join the competition, as long as they meet the following requirements: duly registered with any of the following agencies—Securities and Exchange Commission, DTI, Cooperative Development Authority, Department of Social Welfare and Development—as well as the Bureau of Internal Revenue; has been in existence for the past two years with accompanying financial statements; led by a Filipino citizen; has an ongoing or past program with a specific community; has a management team and is committed to work with its partner community for at least the next three years.

From the qualified organizations that will join the competition, a screening committee will select 16 finalists who will participate in a three-day boot camp where their representatives will undergo training on business pitching.

Lopez and a group of judges, composed of some of the country’s top entrepreneurs, will then select eight finalists who will win Php100,000 each and receive mentorship from the judges themselves in the next eight months. Afterwards, the judges will select three top winners based on the impact they have made on their partner communities. Those selected will receive additional direct assistance from ILOVE and its partner government agencies.

The contest’s judges and mentors include actor and restaurateur Marvin Agustin; Human Nature co-founder Anna Meloto-Wilk; Liter of Light Global Foundation founder Illac Diaz; Bootleg Innovation Design co-founder Aaron Palileo; ECHOstore owners Reena Francisco, Pacita Juan and Jeannie Javelosa; business mentor Marvin Beduya; sociologist Czarina Medina-Guce; and TV producer John Aguilar.

The judges’ eight-month mentorship program with the candidates will also be featured on G Diaries, Lopez’s weekly lifestyle show on ABS-CBN.

“The impulse for Quest for Love is inclusive growth. As such the focus will be on farmers, fishermen, indigenous people and areas where there is conflict—just to show that peace and a putting down of arms is the way to quality of life,” Lopez said in her message posted on Quest for Love’s website.
