(UPDATED) Eliaquim Labang, pastry chef and owner of Quim’s Cake Bakeshop and Café in Tomas Morato, Quezon City said in November 2015 that if Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte wins the 2016 presidential election, he would give away P5 million worth ($107,419.51) of free cake samples.
Labang, in particular, criticized Duterte’s dilly-dallying before on running for president, even reportedly calling the mayor “liar” when he eventually ran. Labang has since then taken down the post mentioning such.
But the netizens remembered. On June 5, 7:50 pm, the pastry chef posted this:
And the bakeshop showed this on their Facebook account:
In a post on May 10, the bakeshop and café said to avail of the sample, “you have to like our Faceook page and reserve a slot by sending us your name, age, address and contact number at quimscake[at]yahoo.com.”
Sampling will be done on the following schedules in their Tomas Morato bakeshop and café from 3 to 5 pm only:
July 1 - First 50 pax to register
July 15 - First 50 pax to register
August 1 - First 50 pax to register
August 15 - First 50 pax to register
September 1 - First 50 pax to register
September 15 - First 50 pax to register
October 1 - First 50 pax to register
October 15 - First 50 pax to register
November 3 - First 50 pax to register
November 15 - First 50 pax to register
December 1 - First 50 pax to register
Netizens are divided though with the gesture.
Some praised the bakeshop owner for keeping his promise.
Others dared him to just give those cake samples on the president-elect's inauguration on June 30.
Others say to give those cakes to the needy instead.
Overall, it is a win-win.
Duterte is now referred to as president-elect.
Labang and his Quim’s Cake Bakeshop and Café is winning hearts (along with criticisms). The stunt (or whatever you may want to call it) is proving that the power of social media, when leveraged well, surely can boost both personal and business brand.
Now that is a sweet treat. – Lynda C. Corpuz
