SMEs show innovative designs at the 59th Manila FAME

A group of emerging designers and promising SMEs in the country have collaborated to present to local and international community what Filipino craftsmanship is all about. Their outputs are featured in One Town, One Program section of Manila FAME, which is now being held at the SMX Convention Center.

<>Manila Fame 1 FINAL_1.pngFor its 59th edition, Manila Furnishings and Apparel Manufacturers' Exchange (FAME) takes Filipino craftsmanship to the next level as it showcases the work of the country’s emerging creative talents and local artisans from various regions across the Philippines. This collaboration is under the Red Box One Town, One Product (OTOP) scenography at Manila FAME slated at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City on March 14–17.

Spearheaded by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Manila FAME is the premiere design and lifestyle event of the country that showcases certified, export-quality products such as furniture and furnishings, holiday gifts and décor, garments, and fashion accessories crafted in the Philippines for the global market. It has nurtured and promoted up-and-coming designers and manufacturers in the global market.

“For this edition of Manila FAME, we are yet again collaborating with both seasoned and new designers to put the spotlight on fresh and contemporary techniques and interpretations that define the country’s design sensibilities,” said CITEM Executive Director Rosvi Gaetos.

A program of the Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT), OTOP is an effective platform to demonstrate local design skills, techniques, and materials. It aims not only to provide small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with product development assistance but also to inspire people with success stories of these promising business undertakings---from how the local artisans carefully gather and collect raw materials to how they painstakingly transform them into finely crafted creations that speak of beauty, quality, and durability.

Through the Red Box OTOP, a collective of emerging designers and promising Philippine-based SMEs will collaborate to present to the local and international community what Filipino craftsmanship is all about. In this special setting, local products from select regions will be unveiled, showing the potential of the Philippines as a reliable source of finely crafted products.

Manila_Fame_3_FINAL.pngUnder the mentorship of Manila FAME Creative Director Budji Layug, six emerging designers will provide assistance to these local small and medium enterprises, including home designer Leah Sanchez, industrial designer Rachelle Dagñalan, Vernice Songco and Marga Espiritu of Bungalow 300, and Bong and Rossy Rojales of Heima.

The Red Box program aims to position the country as a go-to destination for design-savvy and innovative products made by talented Filipino craftsmen whose work are on a par with world standards. Aside from OTOP, the Red Box program includes the following categories: Fashion, Holiday, and Gifts. Each category will have its own scenography at Manila FAME.
