If you've been following news about the Bohol-Panglao Airport, then you would already know by now that it has been quite a few years in the making. Eighteen years after its first feasibility study was conducted, the eco-friendly airport was finally inaugurated on November 27 and will start catering to both domestic and international flights today, November 28. The new airport, which can accommodate as many as two million passengers per year, will be replacing Bohol's current Tagbilaran Airport.

The Bohol-Panglao Airport is dubbed as the âGreen Gateway to the Worldâ as itâs designed to be energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable. According to the Department of Transportation, solar panels on the sloping roof of the terminal building are expected to provide one-third of the airportâs electrical requirements. To further reduce the building's energy consumption, the building is designed to allow for abundance of natural light and ventilation. The eco-airport also features a sewage treatment plant to ensure that waste water will be acceptable for reuse or for returning to the environment.

The project has been in the works since 2000, but had not seen completion until this year. It was originally expected to start commercial operations in August but was reportedly pushed back due to the inclement weather.
