While the 14 Filipino tycoons in Forbes 2017 Global Billionaires List accumulated their wealth through different means, they still tend to gravitate toward certain industries.
Real estate and property development easily comes out as the billionaires' most preferred industry. Twelve of the 14 Philippine billionaires are active in building, selling or renting buildings for residential, office or retail purposes.
As it happens, the real estate market is enjoying a boom amid faster growth in demand for property in the past few years. The Philippine Stock Exchange’s property index, which includes several stocks of companies owned by the billionaires, grew 10 percent year-on-year. In contrast, the PSE Composite Index only grew by less than a percent in the same period.
Coming in second is the leisure and hospitality industry, which covers hotel and casino operators. The sector receives big business from nine billionaires.
