A sinking fund is basically money slowly saved up for an upcoming expense. Now, it’s okay to be matipid, but it’s better to be smart about it—that’s to say, you’ll need to set aside money for leisure, too. Accountant and Rich Habits, Poor Habits author Tom Corley notes that it’s best to set aside 10 percent of your monthly earnings (after tax) for anything you’d like to do. Those weekly massages, sudden BFF get-togethers, and shopping splurges all fall under this category—and this doesn’t cover your food and grocery expenses, by the way.
