4 keys to finding fulfillment in your business

Shift your perspective to the positive things in your life
By Andrea Goseco |

Oftentimes, would-be entrepreneurs have great ideas for potential businesses but become paralyzed and easily discouraged when it comes to actual planning and implementation. asked U.S. certified life coach Andrea Goseco for tips on how entrepreneurs can overcome mental roadblocks commonly associated with launching and maintaining a business.

Q: How do I find fulfillment in my business?

A: Are you familiar with the saying: Money can’t buy you happiness?  It’s a cliché but it’s true.  We think that if we reach our monetary goals we will be happy.  In studies conducted by psychologists, it showed that we will never be satisfied if we base our happiness on material things.  If we make money our ultimate goal, we will always want more.  We have more expectations because we will always want something better.  It’s a continuous climb that will not end.

We are geared towards making money to be able to fulfill our needs. Money is temporary because we can just lose it anytime. There are other ways to be happy and that requires a shift in the way we think.  We need to focus on what is permanent to make us satisfied in life.

According to psychologists, there are several ways for us to experience lasting fulfillment:

1.  Be grateful.

Think of at least three good things that happened during the week.  This shifts your perspective because you are focused on the positive things in your life.  Most of the time we forget our good experiences and magnify the negative things that happened in the week.  Write it down in a notebook so you will remember your positive experiences.  I have one client who used this exercise and she said that it made her feel lighter and happier each day.
2. Savor the moment.

There are a lot of times when we get too busy to appreciate our experiences.  We’re thinking of other things rather than enjoying the present.  It is important to set aside time for things in your life and not to do them all at the same time.  An example is an entrepreneur who thinks that the best part of his work is interacting with customers.  When he starts worrying about his business while talking to his customers, it robs him of enjoying his experience with the customer.
3. Focus on your strengths and interests.

What are the activities that you enjoy doing?  What activities do you need to do to achieve a balanced life?  Your strengths and interests can be a combination of work and other activities outside your work.  An example is an entrepreneur who enjoys the challenges of creating marketing strategies and the challenge of finishing a marathon.  Find time to be able to do activities that will make you a better person.  These are the activities where you can learn and build your skills.
4. Live your life centered on your values.

Think of someone that you admire.  What are his values? An example of values is courage, integrity, patience and perseverance.  List the values of the person you admire and see if this how you also live your life.  Most of the time, we not happy because our life is not aligned to what is important to us.  Each of us has different values based on our background.  Are there things that you need to let go of to be able to have a life focused on your values

Think about your life now.  What kind of a life would your thoughts revolve around money? Change your perspective and you will notice the difference it will make in your life.
