We heart scraps

Environment-friendly enterprise bonds college buddies.
By Maricris Carlos |

No one can accuse the six college buddies behind PolyCrafts, a Cebu-based maker of gifts and giveaways, of not having a heart. They literally have a heart up their sleeve plus an advocacy they’re not shy about pushing.

Although still in the midst of completing their degree in business administration with a double major in marketing management and entrepreneurship, Kevin Wynn Cua, Dominique Suzanne Calienta, Ma. Zaira Eguia, Jomes Kemuel Ibañez, Virgilona Lurot and Josephine Lim are bent on making the business a success after starting operations in May. It’s no ordinary enterprise, it’s a business with a cause. At the heart of the venture is to use recycled plastic scraps to make gifts and giveaways for corporate clients and individuals. As if that advocacy is not enough, the business partners also made it their mission to hire weavers in a poor community in Cebu to help the women earn extra money.

The young entrepreneurs’ heart also shows in PolyCrafts’ top seller, a keychain inspired by Cebu’s hanging rice. Puso—literally heart—is a rice-filled pouch woven out of yellow coconut leaves and is quintessential Cebu.

“Looking at it you’ll remember Cebu. That’s what we’re trying to do,” says Eguia, operations manager.“The puso keychain was a Eureka! product for us,” adds Ibañez, human resource manager. He says by coming out with the puso keychain, PolyCrafts was able to use the smaller scraps weavers end up with, reducing wastes further. “Now the puso keychain is our bestseller.”
